Following the publication of The Red List of Magnoliaceae in 2007, an ex situ survey of Magnoliaceae species was undertaken, which identified 2274 records from 238 institutions in 47 countries. However, only 362 ex situ records represented the 37 most threatened species (Critically Endangered and Endangered) that were held in collection at this time, with more than half of the most threatened taxa not known in ex situ collections at all.
Botanic Gardens Conservation International’s work aims to promote and develop a more efficient, cost effective and rational approach to plant conservation in botanic gardens. We will do this by leading and advocating, leading innovative and strategic projects, building plant conservation capacity, and providing funding.
